Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) is an 8- week educational course designed to develop resilience and a greater sense of connection to others. CCT combines contemporary psychology and scientific research with contemplative practices to strengthen the qualities of compassion, mindfulness, and kindness. The program was developed by the Centre for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE), Stanford University. It is being taught by certified teachers around the world. Compassion Cultivation Training


Cultivating compassion goes beyond feeling more empathy and concern for others. It develops the strength to be with suffering, the courage to take compassionate action in a hurting world, and the resilience to prevent compassion fatigue. These qualities support a wide range of goals, from making positive social change to improving personal relationships.

Compassion cultivation can also support one’s own health, happiness, and well-being. Preliminary research suggests that CCT and similar programs can increase self-compassion and self-care, reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and enhance connection with others.

What is Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT)?

Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) is a secular program designed to 

develop the qualities of compassion, empathy, and kindness for oneself and for others. CCT integrates traditional contemplative practices with contemporary psychology and scientific research on compassion.      

The program was developed at the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University. It is now offered in Vancouver BC and many other places around the world. It’s an eight-week course designed to improve our inner resilience, connection with others and a sense of well-being. The training includes mindfulness practices (meditation, awareness, breathing), lectures, discussions, class exercises, and real-world “assignments”.

Who is it for?

CCT is designed to support anyone who wants to cultivate compassion for themselves and for others. This includes: health care and other professionals, executives, public servants,social and environmental justice activists, parents, educators and people in a wide range of occupations and life contexts. No previous meditation experience is required.

Who is the facilitator?

Magdalena (Magda) Szpala is a CCT teacher, certified by CCARE, Stanford University. She’s an experienced facilitator who led many educational sessions in a variety of settings including business, government, and non-profits. Magda is passionate about offering CCT as a way to build inner resilience to face personal and global challenges. Magda has a master’s degree in Strategic Leadership toward Sustainability and a B.Sc.(Hons) in Psychology. She has also studied the non-violent martial art of Aikido for over ten years and holds a first-degree black belt.
